On 10 March 2017, the first Implementation Network for Metabolomics was launched at the University of Leiden. The Metabolomics Implementation Network consists of key players in the European metabolomics community, including EMBL-EBI, Imperial College London, Leiden University, Oxford University, CIRRMP, CNRS, University of Jena, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, DSM, the Hyve and Euretos.
The Network applies the FAIR data principles (see below) in the field of metabolomics and helps to exchange research data and workflows to combine metabolomics with phenotypic data. Through these activities, the Network aims to improve insight in disease onset and progression, diagnostics and treatment options, personalised medicine, food quality, and plant development & health. Anyone involved in metabolomics research is invited to contribute.

We actively support this network as a key example to bring the vision of the European Open Science Cloud to life.’ Professor Geert de Snoo, dean of the Faculty of Science of Leiden University, concluded the meeting with appreciation: ‘As a sign of my commitment, I want to invite you back to Leiden University in autumn to discuss the first results as soon as the first steps of the implementation have been taken.'
The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) was launched by the European Commission in 2016 with the aim to ensure that science, business, and public services reap benefits of the big data revolution. A group of ‘early mover’ EU member states is now working on the practical implementation of the EOSC in the GO FAIR initiative. GO FAIR consists of three interconnected pillars:
GO CHANGE aims to instigate cultural change to make the FAIR principles a working standard in science and to reform reward systems to incorporate open science activities.
GO TRAIN is about locating, creating, maintaining, and sustaining the required data expertise in Europe through training and education. The aim is to have core certified data experts and to have at least one certified institute in each Member State and for each discipline to support implementation of data stewardship.
GO BUILD deals with the need for interoperable and federated data infrastructures. In addition, it is about the harmonisation of standards, protocols, and services, which enable all researchers to deposit, access, and analyse scientific data across disciplines
